Importance of Diet

We know the importance of regular exercise and a good diet, including fresh fruits and vegetables. and other food groups essential to provide the essential nutrients our bodies need. However, we must also reduce consumption of those items that can cause harm, such as sugar especially in the form of fructose and seed oils.
Seed Oils
Seed oils are often high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which are more susceptible to oxidation, leading to the production of harmful compounds that can cause oxidative stress in the body. Here’s a list of some seed oils that are known for their higher oxidation susceptibility:
1. Corn Oil
High in omega-6 fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid, which is prone to oxidation.
2. Sunflower Oil
Contains a large proportion of linoleic acid, making it susceptible to oxidation, especially when heated.
3. Soybean Oil
Rich in polyunsaturated fats, particularly linoleic acid, which can oxidize easily.
4. Canola Oil
Although lower in PUFAs compared to some other seed oils, canola oil still contains enough linoleic acid to be vulnerable to oxidation.
5. Grapeseed Oil
Very high in polyunsaturated fats, particularly linoleic acid, making it highly prone to oxidation
6. Palm Oil
Hgh in saturated fats, which can raise LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels in the blood. High LDL cholesterol is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke.
Preferred Oils
All oils become oxidised but at different rates. These are considered to be preferred to cause least harm:
- Coconut oil
- Macadamia Nut oil
- Olive oil
Oxidative Stress and the Role of Antioxidants
To counteract the effects of oxidation the body produces some antioxidants. However there are two essential antioxidants that are needed by, but not produced by our bodies :
Vitamin C - a water soluble antioxidant
Vitamin E - a lipid soluble antioxidant
As we get older it is especially important to supplement our diet with lipid soluble vitamin E to protect our cell membranes, which are mainly made of fat, and the organelles inside them from radical oxidative stress and it's just as important to select the most potent form of vitamin E for that purpose.
Yes! There are two main forms of vitamin E: Tocopherols and Tocotrienols.Learn more about these and information about the most pure and most potent form of natural vitamin E and why it's important to select the right one.
